Martin Luther King, JR.
Letter from Birmingham Jail

My first impression of Mr. Kings letter was, “ Oh my Lord!” I was impressed with the style of his writing, the intelligence of his wording, and the way he justified his actions. He was very blunt but truthful. He explained his interpretations of the difference between just and unjust laws, why they were demonstrating against the segregation, and how he was disappointed in the churches stance on segregation. He provided quotes from famous people and from the bible to prove his point. He was nonviolent person, which shows that you don’t need strong actions to make your point. He was called an extremist in paragraph 31, and he concedes that point with quotes from influential people.
In paragraph 30, he wrote, “ Oppressed people cannot remain oppressed forever. The yearning for freedom eventually manifests itself, and that is what has happened to the American Negro.” The American Negro has the right and privileges as any other human being. Race and skin color are just another patch in the quilt of life that makes it beautiful.
